It's late and my mind is searching for distractions from a speech I am writing. Naturally my thoughts turn to chocolate cake. I do a quick web search and find a recipe for a 1 minute microwaved Mug Chocolate Cake. Has to be a gimmick, right? Best to put it to the taste test .....
Recipe: Mug Chocolate Cake
4 tablespoons cake flour
4 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons full-cream milk
2 tablespoons olive oil
splash of vanilla essence
oil mug then add and mix all dry ingredients
Then add egg, milk, oil and vanilla. Stir well.
put mug into the microwave and cook on high for one to three minutes depending on your wattage
remove the hot mug with a tea towel
dust with icing sugar and serve with cream or ice-cream
not a chocolate cake for the purists but it certainly satisfies the craving and best of all there isn't much washing up!
Naaaah, it's not a gimmick. This little gem of a recipe has been doing the rounds between teachers for many years now. I tried it out for the first time last year when i was teaching 20 five year old Reception girls a maths unit of work in measurement. My aims were simply to teach 'full', 'not quite full', 'too full' using kitchen measuring spoons. Boy, this recipe was simple and fun. The girls were engaged during the entire lesson; a non too easy feat with 20 children! I also really enjoyed 'testing' the recipe at home a few times prior to delivering the lesson...gee lesson prep is terribly hard sometimes LOL ;P
ReplyDeleteMy children were fascinated with this recipe when we tried it. The thing is, for me, it's not just that Chocolate Cake Purists wouldn't be keen, it's the texture that lost me. More rubbery than either cake-like or pudding-ish. I think I'll keep this as a novelty recipe;) There are 'genuine' puddings that can be made *nearly* as quickly I prefer otherwise:)
ReplyDelete(Hi Coby!) I tried this today as my youngest is at home with a cold, and I thought it would be fun for us to try. It turned out pretty well I thought! I actually just made it again - double the recipe this time, in a breakfast bowl - with my older children and they had it for dessert with some cream. Mine wasn't rubbery and was actually a lot like the oven-cooked choc self-saucing pudding but with less sauce. Thanks for the recipe!
ReplyDeleteHi suziwong66, coby and arista, glad the humble mug chocolate cake is creating such passionate debate! Keep it coming... Indira
