London's best posh Fish 'n' Chips?

No visit to England is complete without the obligatory fish and chips. Despite Australians almost claiming this as our national dish it was the Brits who first got us hooked. I'm always struck by how rare it is to come across this ubquitious dish in the US - home to every fast food fad around. They are so missing out.

I'm dining alone tonight with my book (Raj Patel's
'Stuffed and Starved' an expose of the world food system)

The vibe at Electric, a hip eatery on Portobello Road in Nottinghill was indeed electric and drew me in like a moth to a flame.

bartenders and waiters efficiently whizzing by in their black waistcoats and long white aprons...

Sloanerangers meeting up after a spot of high steet shopping

Here comes my meal pronto!

Verdict: Crunchy beer-battered crust not too oily and not too thick, chips triple-cooked to perfection, mushy peas crushed with mint and lemon and a caper and pickle diced tartare sauce that I could have eaten a whole bowl of just on its own.

Thank you Your Majesty ... I'll give it 9 out of 10

  2. 50 pounds for lunch? I trust that the fish and chips wasn't the only thing ordered. The food looks alright but I'm not sure that I'd pay that much for it.
