Edible Balcony - First Nasturtium Bloom

The bud has bloomed!

An extraordinary burst of fluorescent colour in a grey city

You're always a little enamoured with your first born...

then the omnivore takes over....

you look good enough to eat!

Coby requested some nasturtium recipes. While I continue my research I came across this delightful, simple, old-fashioned English recipe for nasturtium hors d'eouvres.

Recipe: Nasturtium blossom hors d'oeuvres

Ingredients
15 nasturtium blossoms
100g cream cheese
squeeze of lemon juice
salt and pepper to taste
Method
Mix the cream cheese, lemon and salt and pepper together in a bowl. Spread out nasturtium flowers on your bench and place a spoonful of cream cheese mixture in the centre of each bloom. Now wrap up the flower creating a little parcel. Place parcels on a platter and serve with some elderberry cordial.
How spiffing!

  3. Thanks so much Indira:) Great simple recipe that sounds delicious:) I even happen to have some elderflower cordial to have with them:) Your flower is very beautiful! I imagine this little flower will be safe, it's when they're out in numbers there'll be a feast;)

Was this recipe from a book you have? Sounds very adventurous for an older recipe:D

  4. Hi LeeAnn,
I actully didn't eat my first flower but have had one since. They're delicious - peppery and grassy like an olive oil actually! Indira

    Hi Jo-Ann,
They do have an amazing colour. Strangely I'm having trouble eating them because they look so beautiful with their bright open faces. Indira

    Hi Coby,
The recipe was from a website of old English recipes. You're right - I'm waiting until I have a few more before I give the recipe a test run. Will do a post and give a review. Indira
